GETTING TO RAPALLO, ITALY

We will meet in Rapallo because you are invited to come no matter where you live in the world. So let’s put on our big girl pants and everyone can make their own way to the accommodation easily enough. We can help you sort out info regarding trains or private transfers from Florence, Piza or Milan and provide a map and details. From the Rapallo train stain station, the villa’s a simple walk away. We’ll help to make it easy so you can concentrate on the logistics and questions like:

  1. Should I wear a bikini or full piece on the beach?
  2. How am I going to sneak away from home for my time out in Italy?
  3. Should I have still or sparkling wine with my spaghetti vongole?

Once you have that out of the way, you can join me in my Revel in the Riviera Design and Lifestyle Tour of 2017.

HOW IT WORKS

I will be your host but not your tour guide and I want to make this clear right here and now. I am not a travel agent, nor a tour guide, I don’t speak Italian (but I’m learning) and I am not going to play mother (because I have done it for nearly 20 years and it’s tiring). I have this super itinerary planned, however, you will need to be a little independent and make your own decisions. I am here to make sure I create an 8 day holiday with design, creativity and lifestyle in mind and a holiday that will go down in your history as one of the best times of your life EVER. Goody…Now, what are we going to do?

  • 7 nights in our own beautiful fresco
  • Breakfast will be yummy local produce served up by the villa staff.
  • You’ll share a room with another guest. A private room may be requested if available (extra cost).
  • You’ll also share the living spaces so it’s like a girls weekend on steroids (no boring hotel rooms).
  • The accomodation has, large living spaces, terraces and multiple bathrooms.
  • Day trip to Portofino, San Frutuosso.
  • Day of exploring the five towns of the Cinque Terre.
  • Day in Santa Margherita to explore the stunning architecture.
  • Day to explore coastal towns and explore the unique stores.
  • Seaside visits to laze on a sun lounger and look like Sophia Loren.
  • Castles, villas, and elaborate gardens to make you ooh and ahhhhh.
  • Enjoy the porticos and old town experience in Chiavari.
  • Daily Design and lifestyle class to increase your creativity.
  • To plan and deliver a simple Italian lunch.
  • How to capture the perfect holiday images.
  • About adding vibrancy to your home decor.
  • Creating a vision for your own life.
  • Mixing the old and the new in your home. How to do it successfully.
  • How to buy the right items to take home on your travels.
  • Adding details to the inside and out of your home.
  • Architectural detail…what makes a building special?
  • The group will be accompanied by a photographer.
  • The photographer will capture memories of our group trip with beautiful pics as a keepsake.
  • You’ll learn how to take the perfect photos on your Italian vacation.
  • Take the stress out of capturing the whole tour yourself. We have it covered!
  • The women who came on this year’s tour said that friendships and fun were the best part of the tour.
  • Connect with new people and share special times together (over wine).
  • Come with friends or come alone…I don’t care. If you are fun, happy, easy to get along with then you’re invited.
  • You can come from anywhere in the world, even though I am from Australia. You are welcome!
  • 7 breakfasts at our accommodation
  • 6 dinners with a selection of wine
  • Simple Italian lunch at the villa
  • 1 other lunch at a local restaurant
  • A welcome cocktail party with wine and antipasto.
  • Selection of starter snacks and drinks in the accommodation.

WHY RUN THIS TOUR?

I had been dreaming for years about creating a trip for like-minded women to travel and be inspired by the design, creativity, craftsmanship, colour and vibrancy of Italy. After visiting in Italy in May this year on my Design Tour with a pretty cool group of women, I was even more convinced that it was something I needed to keep doing and there was nobody doing anything quite like this.

This is a tour about women, sisterhood, forging friendships and enjoying an enviable lifestyle in one of the most stunning places on earth. As women, we don’t always give ourselves permission to do something special for ourselves and because I know that you are so busy and that you most likely wouldn’t take the time to plan something like this, I wanted to place it right in your lap. This is an incredible opportunity to explore some of the most glorious parts of Italy to stimulate your design brain and nurture your inner creativity with a small group of fun-loving women.

I am also pretty passionate about seeking out beauty, and finding places, experiences, buildings, scenery, artisans and creatives that can show us that beauty. I wanted us to be immersing ourselves in it all and to escape from the routine of daily life and open our eyes to the excitement around us. I wanted an experience for you that would fill you with so much joy and happiness rather than a tour that just ticks off the must-see list.

HOW IS THIS TOUR DIFFERENT?

We stay in large private villas together so it’s kind of like an 8-day sleepover party. There are no boring hotel rooms where you are isolated and cramped into a shoebox. It’s all about experiencing true Italy, Italian decor and authentic accommodation together in style. Women say this is the best part of the tour and by sharing a home, they’ve created long-term friends for life.

There are no huge buses, big bustling groups and guides with flags. This is a personal tour with 8 women in total and we are all about nurturing fun and frivolity within a small group. I have a highly planned agenda, but the tour is also flexible. If we decide to change plans as a group then we can. If you want to sit something out and head to the beach, then let me know and we can accommodate that.

You are not going to stand in long queues and waste your precious holiday time. We are going use every moment of your time in Italy to do unique and interesting things that big tour groups don’t do.We go behind the scenes, savour wine in intimate trattorias and sneak down tiny streets so beautiful and colourful that they will blow your mind.

This is different…it’s about design, art, creativity, architecture, magnificent scenery, beautiful stores (and maybe just a little shopping).

SENSTATIONAL COLOUR

REVEL IN THE RIVIERA ITINERARY

DAY 1- FRIDAY MAY 26 – ARRIVE AND REVIVE

We’ll squeal with delight as we meet at our deluxe villa at 2 pm in the gorgeous seaside town of Rapallo where we’ll settle into our rooms and get comfortable in our divine surroundings. We’ll meet for a welcome aperitif in the villa gardens and discuss our coastal itinerary for the upcoming week. This afternoon we’ll pop over to Santa Margherita Ligure and take a walk to the Villa Durazzo where we’ll take in the breath-taking views over the harbour and you’ll feel like you’re the star in an Audrey Hepburn film. We’ll spend the afternoon strolling the pretty boutique-lined streets and talk about the architecture of the hotels in the area. This evening we’ll dine in a simple but classy restaurant and sip a little local wine while we watch the sun go down.

SPECIAL GUESTS ON TOUR: We’ll be joined by our Italy Lifestyle ambassador *Lisa Chiodo from Renovating Italy. Lisa and her family left Australia to live a simple life in Northern Italy where they live without a mortgage, grow their own food and share their life to inspire others. In addition, we’ll be joined by local photographer Di Mackey from Di Mackey Photography who’ll capture the visual story of our tour. Di is a New Zealand expat based in Genoa where she captures the beauty of Italy on a daily basis. Things are really going to hot up on this tour with our group of go-getters!

Today’s Lesson: How to create a simple life living in Italy.

DAY 2 – SATURDAY MAY 27 – GLORIOUS GENOA

After a delicious morning breakfast served on our villa terrace, we jump on the train to stunning Genoa to experience a city with wonderful architecture, streets, stores and food. You’ll discover how to take the best photos for the next week so you really know how to show off your trip and capture the most beautiful images possible. We’ll be guided by a local who will introduce us to impressive design stores, bespoke artisan boutiques and generally you’ll feel so alive and inspired that your soul will take on a new form of light. Oh, and of course, we’ll enjoy a lovely lunch together and really be living La Dolce Vita. The photo opportunities will be endless and the fun hanging around with incredible women will be like no other time you’ve had in your life.

Today’s lesson: How to capture the perfect photos on your tour.

DAY 3 – SUNDAY MAY 28 – PORTOFINO, SAN FRUTUOSO & SANTA MARGHERITA

Today we’ll take a picturesque ferry ride to the magical Portofino before wandering through the backstreets of the town and continuing on to San Fruttuoso and Santa Margherita. We’ll spend the afternoon in Santa Margherita Ligure which has everything a Riviera playground should have— plenty of palm trees and attractive hotels, cafés and a marina packed with yachts. Spend the afternoon relaxing on the beach or the local cafes or enjoy a cocktail at an exotic local hotel. For those who want some history, we’ll head to the magnificent Basilica di Santa Margherita d’Antiochia,”Castello di Santa Margherita” and Convento Dei Padri Cappuccini. This evening we’ll head back to Rapallo for dinner at an authentic local restaurant that has the locals raving about it.

Today’s lesson: Architectural detail…what makes a building special?

DAY 4 – MONDAY MAY 29 –  TAKE A HIKE & FREE TO BE DAY

This morning for the keen walkers, we’ll hike from Santa Margherita to Portofino and on to Camogli to wear off our pasta. This is a long hike up to 5 hrs with spectacular views and will certainly be memorable. For those who want to take it easy, you’ll be free to enjoy the local streets and soak up a little sun by the beach in our town of Rapallo. Choose to have a swim, rent an umbrella by the beach, have a long lunch or stay and enjoy our private villa. I have a list of great things to do in the area simply by taking a simple train ride. The group option will be to meet hikers around lunchtime in Camogli. We’ll decide on tour and be a little flexible. Be prepared for anything to unfold as we just soak in the lifestyle of the Italians. We’ll enjoy dinner at a local restaurant tonight.

Today’s Lesson: Mixing the old and the new in your home. How to do it successfully.

DAY 5 – TUESDAY MAY 30– COLOUR & CREATIVITY IN THE CINQUE TERRE

Today we’ll explore three of the five towns of the Cinque Terre by ferry and train. We’ll train to the gorgeous town of Monterosso before taking the ferry to Riomaggiore, Manarola and Corniglia for a late lunch and a glass of wine. Relax while taking in the most incredible view and photo opportunities. We’ll head off to spend the afternoon in Vernazza where you can check out the gorgeous local streets. Today you will enjoy a taste of these glorious hillside/seaside towns. The colours of the Cinque Terre will blow you away. It’s your own choice for dinner tonight so do as you please as there are so many amazing options.

Today’s lesson: How to add personality and vibrancy to your home inside and out.

DAY 6– WEDNESDAY MAY 31 – CHARMING CHIAVARI

Today we will take in some of the architecture of quaint, local town of Chiavari where we’ll explore the old historical centre, wander through the shady porticos and down the narrow laneways. Let’s enjoy the charm of this place and as we take a bespoke tour around the town to visit some specialist creators in the area. Like chocolate? If so, then you are in for a treat….shhhh, I’m keeping that a secret for now but you will get excited for sure. This afternoon you are free to spend time enjoying Chiavari on your own. Do a little shopping or food sampling, relax in the piazzas or one of the many parks. This is a day to savour Italian life in this quaint town. Dinner tonight in an amazing restaurant out of Rapallo which is an experience more than just a dinner.

Today’s Lesson: Creating a vision for your own life.

DAY 7 – THURSDAY JUNE 1 – GENOA OR  FREE TO BE DAY(your choice)

This morning we’ll make our way to Genoa to view one of the most incredible places imaginable. The Monumental Cemetary Staglieno is one of the largest cemeteries in Europe and covers more than a square kilometre. Sounds morbid you say? No, it’s not like that…there is so much beauty and soul-stirring emotion awaiting you here. The sculptures and monuments will leave you breathless….truly they are magnificent. It’s also a place for quiet reflection, a time to contemplate our own lives and a time to express our gratitude for our own lives.

Tonight at our farewell dinner, we will reminisce about at our wonderful Italian lifestyle for the past week and share our greatest memories and gifts that the week brought us.

Today’s lesson: How to plan a life where you go for your dreams.

DAY 8 – FRIDAY JUNE 2 – FAREWELL FRIENDS

Today after breakfast we will say our farewells, shed a few tears and wave off our new friends. You can either continue on your travels (because there is so much to see and do in Italy and flights are very reasonable) or head home with fond memories and a happy, contented heart.

I REALLY WANT YOU TO COME IF:

  • You want to hang out with incredible women.
  • You want to learn more about creating a more interesting home and life.
  • You like to witness the beauty of the Italian coastline morning, noon and night.
  • You dream of hanging out in stunning accommodation in a seaside town.
  • You love  having long leisurely meals in beautiful places every day.
  • You want to reignite your creativity and design knowledge.
  • You enjoy meeting new people and sharing memories with new friends.
  • You love wandering down cobblestone streets and peeking into artisans stores.
  • You always embrace having fun and enjoying each day.

I’M NOT SURE THIS IS FOR YOU IF:

  • You don’t like sharing a home with a group of amazing women (This is not hotel living)
  • You can’t tackle a few (lots of) steps….this part of Italy has lots of them.
  • You don’t have a reasonable level of fitness and stamina.
  • You aren’t prepared to make a few of your own simple decisions.
  • You are a drama queen when everything does not unfold perfectly.
  • You want a big tourist group and guides with flags.
  • You are not prepared for a little adventure and daily creativity.
  • Don’t want to eat and drink authentic Italian food and wine every day, multiple times
  • You are scared about what might happen to your waistline.

WHY TRAVEL WITH CARMEN?

CREATIVE SOUL WITH A LOVE FOR TRAVEL     carmen circle

After visiting Italy I just knew that so many women would love to do the same as me and experience the country from a design and lifestyle perspective and I wanted to bring women who wanted that together.

I WANT US ALL TO DO SOMETHING WE’RE PASSIONATE ABOUT

We work hard and life is busy. I want to create something super-special so we can just live life to the full for nine blissful days. It’s about finding yourself, igniting your passion and renewing your zest for life.

LOVE OF TRAVEL, ART, HISTORY, ARCHITECTURE AND COOKING

These are my passions and they fuel me and most probably you too. I wanted to share all of these things with a group of women who will appreciate and connect with them like I do.

FUN AND FRIENDLY

Tours that are serious are not my cup of tea. I embrace life in a fun and friendly manner and this will be no different in the Italian Riviera and savouring the sights and tastes of The Cinque Terre. We’ll squeal with delight while having a dip in the sea and hang with the locals and try to speak Italian over a glass of prosecco.

SHARE WHAT I KNOW AFTER YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY

Each day I want to share a little of what I have learned about creating a home and life we love. I want to help women be more expressive in their lives, find more moments of joy and work towards doing things in their life that they truly love.

HERE’S WHAT MY PAST GUESTS HAVE TO SAY

“Wow, where to start? I absolutely loved the tour! I’ve just re-read your dream “to create something unique and special for women, in a context of friendship and sisterhood”. Well, in my opinion, you nailed it !

As you know I travelled from Australia solo. There are many highlights. However if I can only choose one, it would be the company of the lovely women on the tour (including yourself Carmen) who all shared the same passion for travelling to Italy on an adventure. Despite our varying knowledge of art, architecture, food and wine choices, the language, our health all being so diverse, we shared laughter and happiness together every day. It has been wonderful to be home and continue the contact with new friends and it is hopefully just the beginning of long lasting friendships.

The guided tours you organised Carmen deserve a special mention too. The guides themselves were delightful. I personally enjoyed the tours to the private studios to see first hand some extremely talented artists (and I’m not even an artist) however it was very personal and unforgettable. Having a chauffeur through Tuscany, again, brilliant. I felt like I was in a movie set so much of the day.

Leaving a family behind to go and travel is not easy for any mother. However, my husband, my teenage son and daughter are proud of me for going and doing something for myself. I didn’t expect that. They gained independence and faced some of their biggest fears like ‘separation anxiety’ and became more resilient knowing that mum can go away alone and she comes back happier and healthier than when she left. How good is that!”

“I think for me the best memories I have are of the friendship shared. The laughing, celebration of birthdays, amazing dinners, deliciously different wine the friendships enriched, renewed and discovered, the caring of others, and the caring we had to do for ourselves. It’s hard sometimes to stop in your busy lifetime to be you again. To be just you, nobody’s wife, mother, employee, or boss, gave a sense of freedom, this itself was a really thrilling experience, and I think we don’t get to do very often .

We didn’t have to think about cooking, washing, meetings, school pick up, and to be away with a group of women was a great privilege.

As far as the trip, I loved Florence, every corner was a wow moment. The buildings, people, art, architecture, culture, did I say, the people? I loved everything about Florence.

The places we visited were spot on for me, the tour guides were such a great addition and gave such a personal insight to the places we visited, especially the artisan tour. The accommodation was also in great locations and had very comfortable beds. Finally, did I mention the highlight was the friendship of women.”

“I can’t thank you enough for organising the trip of a lifetime for me to Italy. You put so much thought and research into the trip and we did some wonderful things that I would never have thought to do, like the wonderful wine tasting lunch in Florence, the visit to the winery in the Tuscan region, visiting the artists in Florence and our many fantastic dinners and lunches throughout the holiday.

The apartments we stayed in were stunning and I have stayed in a lot of 5-star places in my life and they were by far my favourite digs.

It was just a groups of girls having a great time together and sharing a lot of laughter and making memories. I have made friends for life and can’t wait to do it again with you.

Italy, my happy place. Whether it be in a historical city, a quaint village on the water or in the rolling countryside, you will see beauty in everything around you. Not to mention the food, wine, and accommodation. This was an amazing trip made even more special with the friendships that evolved. I loved it!

DO I NEED TO DRESS SUPER FANCY?

No. This is a very casual holiday so you will need smart casual day wear, some walking gear and a couple of nice outfits for dinner. High heels are not necessary and not overly practical for cobblestone streets. Please travel light as you don’t want to be burdened with huge suitcases, plus there are many shopping opportunities to buy lovely things.

ARE FLIGHTS INCLUDED?

No. You will need to book your own flights because everyone is welcome to come no matter where they live and whatever carrier they prefer to use. Maybe you have frequent flyer points that you would like to use?  We are here to help you and with my own dedicated travel agent by my side, we can help with all your flight and travel planning. Just ask me.

DO I NEED MY OWN TRAVEL INSURANCE?
Yes. You must have your own travel insurance to come on the tour and will need to provide copies of the insurance to me prior to departure. Without travel insurance, you cannot join the tour.
CAN I TRAVEL PRIOR TO THE TRIP OR AFTER IT IS FINISHED?
Yes. You can definitely take advantage of being in Italy and head to any number of amazing places. We can help you with that. You may like to do the Ten in Tuscany + Revel in the Riviera Tour together as they almost back to back with only one day in between. We can help with accommodation on that day.
DO I HAVE TO BE FIT AND HEALTHY?
Yes, you must be fit and healthy as the tours require a lot of walking during the day and Italy has a lot of steps. You also have to be responsible for carrying all of your own luggage as we are not staying in hotels with porters. If you suffer from any major illness or health issues that you cannot manage yourself with ease, unfortunately, this tour cannot provide the level of care you may need.
WHY AREN’T SOME LUNCHES AND DINNERS INCLUDED?
I want to keep the trip flexible and on some days we will choose to go and do our own thing which gives you the chance to eat when and where you like. If we do eat together on those meals, the women in the past tours set up a kitty to make payment at restaurants easy. This worked really well and made our lunches fun and stress free.
WHAT IS THE STORY WITH ALCOHOL?
At the lunches and dinners provided, I will supply a few bottles of wine to have with our meal. Any other drinks you order beyond that will be at your expense. If you don’t drink alcohol then that is okay but please be aware that it will be a part of many of the lunch and dinner experiences and if you find it uncomfortable, this may not be the tour for you.
IS THE ITINERARY LIKELY TO CHANGE?
There may be a few little tweaks to the plan, but ultimately it will say very similar. Plans change depending on weather, restaurant availability and group decisions made on the day. I like to have a solid plan, but I am also open and flexible to changes.
WHAT IF I CHOOSE NOT TO DO AN ACTIVITY THAT HAS BEEN PLANNED?
Please notify me prior to the tour if possible if there is something that you choose not to do. If you decide on the tour not to do an activity then that is perfectly fine however the tour will proceed with the planned itinerary without you. We can certainly assist you with alternative ideas.
WHO WILL I SHARE WITH?
Accommodation will be either twin or group share depending on the accommodation. If you are travelling with a friend, I will ensure that you are together. If available, you may request your own room at an additional cost. All accommodation is a shared villa or apartment as we are not staying in hotels.
